Welcome to Freebie Friday! This week has literally flown by! We had a blast at our annual Editorial Board Meeting. This was the first time all of the new Go-to Gals and the Paper Crafts team were in one room. Our Go-to Gals flew in on Monday, flew out on Wednesday and in between those short 48 hours, we found time to review all of last year’s magazines, concept all of next year’s issues, participate in two photo shoots, enjoy two dinner parties and laugh until our stomachs hurt. Who knew “working” could be so much fun!
And the fun continues because all next week we’ll be counting down the days until World Card Making Day arrives on Saturday, October 3. We’re once again partnering with creative editor Cath Edvalson and her Moxie Fab World blog. She’s taking a really fun approach that plays off the “world” title in her blog. If you thought Paper Crafts magazine couldn’t reach the far corners of the earth, wait until you see what Cath has in store! The global participation begins next Monday, so make sure you check back with us!

Paper Crafts Go-to Gal Kim Kesti turned the WCMD logo into this fun card!
Next week on Paper Crafts Connection:
Magazine Monday– Have you ever wondered what cardmakers are like in England? Well, the wait is over because we’ll be spotlighting the UK-based publication PaperCraft inspirations. We’ll ask one of their editors all the questions you’ve been dying to know like their favorite occasions to paper craft, techniques they love and why paper crafting has such an universal appeal. And there will, of course, be a jolly good giveaway (said in my best English accent!).
Tuesday – Editor Susan R. Opel will spotlight the Celebrate section of the World Card Making Day web site. Who knew there were so many fun ways to commemorate this holiday? She also has some fun product from KI Memories up for grabs!
Wednesday – Since World Card Making Day officially kicks off the holiday card-making season, Paper Crafts Go-to Gal Kim Hughes will give us some valuable tips for mass producing cards. She’ll also talk about what retail store she’ll be visiting on World Card Making Day. And if you’re a fan of GCD Studios, she’s got some of their gorgeous product to give away!
Thursday – Managing Editor Brandy Jesperson will spotlight the Sponsors/Gallery sections of the World Card Making Day web site. She’ll also announce a fun contest, where five cards will be selected from the World Card Making Day gallery and spotlighted on this blog the week of Oct. 5-Oct. 9. If that wasn’t cool enough, she’s giving away some gorgeous Christmas product from SEI.
Freebie Friday – Join us for our “Editor Ask Around” where I’ll reveal how each editor will be celebrating World Card Making Day. I’ve also got two amazing prize packages from Little Yellow Bicycle that are just waiting to go to good homes.
Saturday- Happy World Card Making Day! We want to hear how you’ll be celebrating this special holiday. Pajama party with your closest girlfriends? Reorganizing your craft room? Whatever the answer, I’ll pick one random person to win an unbelievable prize package. Let’s just say this person will win the paper crafting jackpot!
So, are you getting excited yet? We’ve been planning all year and can’t believe that the big day is almost here! To get the ball rolling, I’m happy to announce an exciting addition to our World Card Making Day blog tour! Susan mentioned last week that absolutely anybody could participate. As long as you plan on celebrating World Card Making Day in some fun way, we would love for you to add your blog URL to our growing list of passionate supporters (We’re at 154 and counting!).
The addition is we’ve asked 25 of our most popular bloggers to take part in a fun promotion. In exchange for posting a card to their blogs, they will each give out a 25% off coupon code that’s good for ANYTHING in our online store! So click HERE to see the 25 designers, then go visit their blogs and finally, go shopping! The coupon expires at midnight (MST) on Oct. 12, so don’t delay!
For today’s giveaway, I have three Technique Tuesday stamp sets and a copy of Holiday Cards & More, Volume 4. Leave a comment telling me why YOU think card making has such an universal appeal. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Three lucky winners will take home this fun prize package!
Happy Friday!
Kelly

Card making is so great because life is more about people, than things. Sharing thoughts, feelings, sentiments with loved ones makes life special.

I think it’s so appealing because in this day and age it’s nice to receive something that someone put time into and made just for you

I know it appeals to people in Croatia (where I live) because there are no pretty card stores around. So, if you want to give a beautiful card, you’ll have to make it yourself. Unfortunately, there are no craft stores either, but hopefully someday!

I think many aspects of card making make it universal. Firstly it’s open to everyone whether you have a fancy paper shop down the road or you use up old cereal boxes to create your cards. It’s also very easy to appreciate a hand made card that is in another language, the design and creativity is still fantastic to look at. And no matter where you are, someone loves you and there is nothing better than receiving a card from someone who cares.

I thinks that’s because anyone likes to receive and make a beautiful card. You can make it the way you like and write kind words to the one you love.

I think its appealing because the process is such a great outlet for folks. Most of us don’t get to be creative in our daily lives, so card making gives us a refreshing change.

Card making can be something quick you can do to get your creative energy out and when you pop something homemade in the mailbox and it shows up at someone’s door you know it’s going to create a smile….that’s the best part for me! Who doesn’t love getting something homemade and personal in the mailbox….better than bills any day!

For me, card making appeals because you design what your heart tells you. It’s not only the creativeness of the person that is making the card but for sure, that person is putting her/his thoughts and his feelings while doing it.

I find cardmaking to be so soothing, like someone said, brings me back to the days of white glue and macaroni on the cards I used to make for my parents that were received with oohs and aahs! And it is a lot less stressful for me that scrapbooking, but at the same time, has helped me get back to scrapbooking. It’s all good!

Card making to me is an easy, creative outlet. I don’t need to take time to consider photos. That is a major consideration for me. I can just concentrate on what will look great and make the recipient smile.

For me what I have learned and seen time and time again is the joy one gets from creating something with just a couple of materials that wasn’t there a few hrs before and being able to share w/each piece that is made is a piece of you that has burst of happiness you created.. and sharing it well thats just the cherry on top

5) you meet the most wonderful people who love to share what they do
6) as you can see I could go on and on………………..

Cardmaking goes back to the crafting circles women used to belong to. With how busy we are today working, it is nice to work on small projects, such as cards, and then send them to our Circle of Friends.

To me, cardmaking is universal because the desire to communicate with the people in our lives that we care about is universal. We use cards to reach out, celebrate happy occasions, and commiserate with those who are ill or who have had a loss. And it can be enjoyed at virtually any age — my little daughter just made a card, with my help, last night.

I think card making allows for quick release of creativity and ease of finishing a project. You can taylor your card to your amount of time to scrap. So Clean and Simple for a quick in the mail card, or more elaborate for a release of personal creativity and playing with multiple techniques.
I myself can’t wait to the festivities to begin!

Cardmaking is an “art” form that needs no translation. The picture of an apple is still an apple no matter what country you are in. And now with the world wide web, we are able to share our creative passions without needing to know 12 different languages. It is so awesome!

I think cardmaking is so big because everyone loves to receive handmade items, and it’s fairly quick to whip one up. Because it’s such a small project, you can try different techniques and products without committing too much time (or $$!). Can’t wait for WCMD! Hopefully I can finalize my Christmas card designs for then…

I think that making a card gives instant creating satisfaction, without the long-term committment of other crafts, it’s inexpensive (relatively) to do, and everyone needs cards to give. You can be as creative as you want, and give a personal and unique gift everytime you mail a card!

I think card making is so universal because it’s a small canvas easily filled with a lot of emotion, personality, and heartfelt sentiment. The giver as well as the receiver get more out of it than words can really say giving cards a worldly appeal.
Can’t wait for next week! Sounds like some great blog posts coming our way, as usual!

First of all, I just have to say that I LOVE those Technique Tuesday stamps you have for the blog prize. Cardmaking provides several immediate pleasures that give universal appeal. First, the pleasure of creating something. Second, the materials can be economical or luxurious and the results are still beautiful. And third, the pleasure of sending the card to someone, it’s a little love in an envelope.

Universal appeal is due to the fact that snail mail is rarely received anymore – technology has taken over: text messages, emails, facebook, etc. What could make someone feel more special than receiving a card just because? I’ll tell you! It would be receiving one that was made just for you!

For me, cardmaking is how I show another person that I have been thinking of them. You have to plan ahead to make the perfect card for a specific person, it isn’t liking stopping by the store to pick up something at the last minute. I like to tag cards I see in the magazine with specific names, knowing I am going to use that idea for a specific person in my life.

Cards are such a wonderful way to spread joy the old-fashioned way. I would much rather receive a card in the mail, wishing me a happy birthday or inviting me to a party, instead of getting an e-mail. Cards are great in that even after the event has passed, you can look at the card and be reminded that the giver was thinking of you on that special day. I recently found out that my mom had been saving all the cards I’ve sent her. I always pegged her as a “throw-way” person and it gave me a warm feeling knowing that she viewed my creations as special enough to keep!

For me, it is a tradition that has been passed down in my family. My grandmother hand made Christmas Cards back in her day, and handmade her own stamps!!!!!!!
I have very recently picked up scrap booking and card making. I sent my first homemade card last month as a get well to my aunt. The pride I felt in that card was tremendous. I took a picture of it to keep! I couldn’t wait for her to get it, and wished I could have been there (as a fly on the wall) to see her open it, and realize it had been hand made!
Being creative and the feelings that go along with it, must be why it is loved world wide! A card is a bonus, because those emotions are experienced both on the giving and the receiving end!

In our now technical world, I think people enjoy receiving a real piece of mail. Plus the fact that something handmade comes from the heart and is treasured by the receiver. Plus it is so much fun to make cards!!

Cardmaking is so appealing because it not only gives you a creative outlet, it also helps you personalize your greetings to special people in your life. Why take the time to search for and buy a card in a store when you can create a one-of-a-kind message and personalize it for the person you care about?

Personally, I believe that card making has a universal appeal for one simple reason. Creativity. We all leave elementary school and miss those days of art and having a reason to craft and color. We yearn for those days when we could spend hours being creative and this has become our outlet. Happy card making everyone!

I think it’s because you can express your creativity. You can finish a project quickly and there are so many reasons you need one to share with people. You also can bring in so many different craft skills.

Card-MAKING (as opposed to card-BUYING) has a universal appeal because it is a small way to show the recipient of your card that they are special enough for you to take the time to make a card instead of buy one

Cards are a way to express feelings. Everyone has moments when they could use the pick-me-up of a card and everyone can create a card to express their feelings. There’s no right/wrong when it comes to cardmaking!

I think that card making has a universal appeal because it is a creative outlet for all. Cards can be quick and easy to make or as involved as you want them to be. When you are finished, you have a piece of art! The bonus part is that you share your piece of art with the card’s recipient. A personal connection!

It’s something that everybody can do no matter their age, income or skill level. It comes from the heart and is always appreciated. Cards are like little kisses. They’re little packages of happiness.

I think cardmaking has universal appeal because you can make something handmade in just a short amount of time. Unlike some other crafts, which can take days or even months to create, cards can be made in minutes. It’s a great option for busy people who still want to give something handmade.

I think it’s universal because everone sends greeting cards, it’s therapeutic and fun to make them and also giving something that you made yourself shows the receiver that you really care about them and are willing to put time and effort into celebrating their special occasion.

Cardmaking is so fun and rewarding. It is something anyone can do no matter where they live. The internet has allowed us to see people’s work from all over the globe, which is also very fun. And, since people can purchase supplies from the internet I can order the same stamp set as someone in Australia. It’s amazing. One other example is Cards for Heroes. I can send my challeng cards in and they go to troops that are stationed all over the world too.

By giving a handmade card to someone you are sharing your creativity. Most people can make cards if they only tried and they would find it to be therapeutic and its so nice to recieve a card knowing that it is has been made with you in mind rather than just bought off the shelf

I can’t imagine there is anyone in this wide world of ours that doesn’t enjoy receiving a handmade card that lets them know that they matter to someone. Everyone loves cards and from the comments of those I’ve sent cards to, handmade ones leave an unforgettable impression on those that receive them. Can’t wait for World Cardmaking Day!

I think that card making has such a universal apeal because it gives the creator an outlet to express themselves while making something personal for the recipient. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a wonderful, handmade card that someone loves….

Making cards is good, clean FUN! That’s why everybody likes it. It is so much more exciting for the recipient of the card if it was made with that person in mind too so it makes the card maker use their brain when making the card, which is always good for us!

Because everybody loves to receive a card. It makes them feel special that someone remembered them. It makes them feel extra special if it is handmade because they knew that you took the time to hand craft the card for them.

I think it’s because a person can satisfy their creative side in a project that doesn’t take forever to complete; I also think that there are certain people that all of us know that just appreciate a hand made card because they know that a little bit of our soul and love went into the making of it.

I think card making is so satisfying because it gives you a chance at a creative outlet and at THE SAME TIME lets you ‘give’ something of yourself when you give that card to someone else! Nothing better than a handmade gift- and that’s what cards are!

I think card-making has such a universal appeal because deep down all of us have times when we’ve needed a little pick-me-up from a friend and I think all of us hope, that at some time, we can be that for someone else when they need it – cards are a simple but effective way to say you’re thinking of someone – no matter what the occasion.

I think it’s nice that we have World Card Making Day. It’s a way to remind us of the traditional way of keeping in touch with friends and loved ones and I think handmade cards give a more personal touch rather than the virtual stuff we have today. In this day of technolog, internet, e-mails, etc. it’s still nice to receive and exchange hand made cards.

Making cards for others is one way of sharing part of yourself. I always make it personal, each card is designed for that person. It’s made with love and I know they all appreciate that. That’s why it’s the one thing in the World that each person can do for someone else. Even making a generic card is still sharing something for your heart! And after all, isn’t it “Love that makes the World go round”???

Just as in my needlepoint, where I used to make larger patterns that took forever and now tend to make smaller seasonal pieces … it’s the same with my scrapping! I used to scrapbook and in the last few years have tended to lean toward making cards – smaller, compact “pieces of art” that I can share with friends and family!
… tho’ I really should toss in a scrapbook page now and then, LOL!
Thanx for the inspiration and chance at the t’riffic blog candy!

We all have a need to connect with someone. We also have a need to create. For those of us that paper craft, those two needs uniquely blend and lead to expression through cards. The process is satisfying to the giver and the result is pleasing to the recipient. The time, talent, and effort that it takes to create a home-crafted card is considered part of the gift and a measure of the value of the recipient. It is also a reflection of the giver. The recipient has tangible evidence of their own worth to enjoy for many months. All of this to say, no matter where you live, we like makin’ ‘em & we like gettin’ ‘em!!

Fantastic giveawey! I want to be lucky winner….
I think card making has such an universal appeal because it something unusual, exclusive, the card becomes only one.
The understanding of that that such is more at anybody is not present gives to the person sensation of happiness.
I like to do cards, for me it as meditation, leaving from vital problems. It is my personal world, the Universe giving to me calmness and possibility to create…

I think it’s appealing because it’s personal. It’s not a message or an email it’s gorgeous paper with beautiful images and embellishments and bling if you like……..it says I took the time to express myself creatively and show you that I care. And of coarse…….it’s THERAPY!!!

Card making is a tangible expression of what we feel. It’s universal because people of all cultures like to know they are thought of in times of happiness and times of sorrow. I also think it’s much more meaningful to recieve a card in person or by mail than to open an email. You can feel, touch and smell the work that someone put into that card for you.
Thanks for the chance

Card making has a universal appeal because they are tactile. An email or face book message is nice, but a card is anticipation of opening the envelope, the emotion of reading a message especially for you and then you can keep the card and remember that person and those moments for ever. Thanks for asking.

Making a card for someone lets them know you think about them, you care about them and you took the time to sit down and create something special for them. In some situations it is hard to use words, so a thoughtful card is the best way how to express one´s thoughts and feelings. Cardmaking makes a better world!

I think for women…. it is just a way to do something just for them in their own home. We get to spend time doing something we love and we use a different part of our brain than most of us don’t normally get to use! We can let the other side rest for a while!
Plus… we make something for the ones we love!

I think the universal appeal has alot to do with the the wonderful array of sources that we have at our disposal. With the internet/computer, we can order/download practically anything we need to customize our handmade cards to say or look however we want them to. I use to dread going into a store to look for 5 minutes for a card “I thought” was just right. Now, I ‘d rather spend 5 hours making one card, knowing it is exactly how I want it to look and saying exactly what I want it to say. See you Saturday for the celebrations.

I think card making is great because even a beginner can do a lovely job, you don’t *have* to go to special classes to learn how to do it, such as pottery or whatever. cards are something everyone uses and receives. You almost always need a card for something, unlike that Father’s Day tie, which can get a bit old, you can customise it to your heart’s content, no more strolling up & down the card aisle trying to find the perfect one, your only limitations are your own creativity.

According to me.. cardmaking has such a universal appeal as its ONE thing whcih unites people from different parts of the world together.. there is no language or any other barrier in cardmaking and the techniques used on the cards can be totally shared..
.. moreover, if we don’t know what to gift our crafty buddies.. theres always going to be an option open for cards!

I believe that card-making is universally appealing because it’s deeply personal, not too expensive and because it brings thoughfulness and friendship into our lives, when we least expect it. In a time when almost everything is done electronically (email, texting, etc), a personalized, handmade card is tactile. You can go to the actual mailbox and open an actual envelope. You can look at the actual card and know that someone took the time and creative energy to create it just for you. You can enjoy it endlessly.

I think the most appealing thing about card making is knowing that someone made that card just for you! It makes a person feel special to know that thousands of other people aren ‘t getting the same card (like they would with a card from the store), that there’s is truely one of a kind.

I think the appeal comes from receiving something in your mail box… your actual mailbox and not your harddrive! Something that isn’t a bill… and that someone took the time to create… just for you!
