Hello again, it’s your lovable design intern! And Happy Button Day!
Back to blogging! I can’t say I’m hooked, but it’s pretty fun. (And not quite as scary the second time around!)
When I was told that today was Button Day, it raised a lot of questions. What is Button Day? What kind of buttons are they talking about? Are they metaphorical? Is it a day for pushing people’s buttons? What about flair? My Facebook flair collection is fairly large…perhaps the day should be celebrated by doubling it? (Sadly, Wikipedia is of no use in this case. Whatever shall I do?)
And why are we celebrating buttons? It’s not that buttons aren’t useful or fun, but do they need a whole day to celebrate? What about Zipper Day? Snap Day? I’m just saying…maybe there are other things we could have celebrations for. It’ll catch on, right?
Of course, there is definitely a lot to be said for buttons in paper crafting. I have seen so many cards with buttons made into balloons, flowers and birds. There are really cute ideas that I would never have thought of before, and some of them even incorporate the design on the button into the new design. Too cute! Just like Former Paper Crafts Pro Alisa Bangerter’s Birthday Buttons Card from our new resource book A Card a Day. I would love to receive a card like this for my birthday!

Birthday Buttons Card by Alisa Bangerter
Okay, maybe I’m starting to see the need for Button Day. (For more button inspiration, click HERE to see how our 2009 Gallery Idol finalists incorporated buttons into their card designs. Pretty amazing, huh?) I bet you’re saying you could really use some buttons about now. Your wish is my command! Leave a comment telling me why you love buttons so much and I’ll pick one winner to win this assortment of colorful buttons from American Crafts! All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

One lucky winner will take home ALL of these buttons!
Your Paper Crafts Design Intern,
Melinda

I love buttons, because they’re really tactile, and pretty, and you can recycle them and they don’t need a special way to attach them, and just because they look so darn cute

What’s not to love about buttons! They’re anything but boring as they come in so many colors, shapes and sizes. I like brads but buttons add even more interest to the center of a flower for instance!

Since I was a little girl, I remember my Me-Maw’s button jar. I LOVED that jar! I loved looking at all of the different colors, shapes, and sizes…wondering where some of them had originally been ‘living’ and what kind of clothing would have a button shaped like that? I now have my Me-Maw’s buttons plus hundreds more…using the ‘new’ ones to embellish cards and other paper crafts. Thanks for the chance to add to my collection…no one can have too many buttons! Happy Button Day!!!!

The flower button card is just too sweet! Very happy and fun. I am a button fanatic. I like using buttons on just about everything. My mother collected old buttons for years and years so I was always hunting for unique ones for her. She finally gave that up and gave me all her buttons, score! I love just going through all of them, each one like a little treasure.
Thanks for sharing with us today. Have a happy day!

I love that no two buttons ever are exactly the same. Some are chipped, color is slightly different. I love it. Also, buttons remind me of my grandmother, who was a seamstress, so I feel I am always paying my respects to her craft when I make a card with buttons or sewing on it!

Hi Melinda -
I’ve been collecting buttons since I was a little girl. My grandmother used to be a seamstress and I loved nothing better than going through her button stash. Today, I still take all buttons off of clothing that can’t be salvaged. Some of the really interesting ones I make molds out of and use in making PMC jewelry. Because that is how I see buttons, like little jewels that can enhance anything they are put on.
Thanks
Elaine Allen

Buttons are the best! They complete almost everything, from shirts to cards! They can hid an opps, and can be used over and over again! I even found a tutorial on making your own Faux buttons. I now use every scrap of paper I have left over for buttons so no beautiful patterned paper goes un used!

I have ALWAYS loved buttons. My grandma had a cookie tin full of antique (now) buttons, and I would spend a LONG time looking at them, and feeling them. I now love to use them on cards because they just jazz them up somehow. I will look at a card and think—it needs something. Many times it’s a button!

Buttons are the perfect little embelishment to add a pop of color or texture to a card. Plus, they’re inexpensive – I have a store near me that has a big bin and they’re just a penny a piece!

What a fun card! I’m only just now getting into buttons, so I have a very small stash and have yet to make something with them. I hope to use some for my sis-in-law’s upcoming birthday though. I just love the dimension and extra pop they add to a card!

Buttons add so much to a project. I have a button jar with the remnants of my grandmother’s buttons, hooks and snaps as well as my mother’s buttons. Some are big pearly buttons from old bathrobes of the 40’s or 50’s, some are elegant rhinestone buttons from evening gowns of days gone by. One can never have enough buttons, so I’d gladly add these to my stash and use them on worthy projects.

My earliest memories of buttons come from my mom. She had this old blue jar filled with buttons. I used to love to dump them out. There were so many shapes, sizes, and colors!! The older I got, it became fun to remember what the buttons had once been part of. Of course, my mom and Gram were big sewers. These days I am lucky to sew on a missing button! I wish I had a big jar like that for my girls to look at (and for me to use on cards! I just learned to cover buttons last week at stamp club.
Writing this makes me want to go out and buy a bunch of fun buttons to put in a jar! I can look at them or craft with them – what fun!

I love buttons not only because they keep my pants from falling down and by chest from bursting out (tee hee;) but also because I rarely make a card without this fab embellishment. Buttons are my go to card bling- now the debate- do you leave them naked ( I do) or must you always add some sort of string tee hee.

I love buttons because they are the universal embellishment! They go with any and every theme and they come in so many fabulous colors, shapes and sizes! You can always find the perfect one! (It’s just always at the store and not in my stash…that’s the only problem I have with the ‘perfect one.’ LOL!)

I love buttons because they’re so versatile! They’re great for flower centers and wheels on vehicles, but they’re also great for borders. I don’t just buy all the cute new buttons, I keep the extra buttons that come with clothing. I have a special jar that I put them in, and then when I need a random button, I have one!

i think that one just cannot have enough buttons. they have so many uses and are often so cute. i love attaching buttons to cards with embroidery floss as embellishments, using them as spacers in bracelets and necklaces, and especially when i tie my quilts with floss or funky yarn(older children and adult, not baby quilts). recently i purchased some buttons that look like blackbirds to add to a journal quilt for the month of May and they are way cool! (ok, yeah… i am running a few months behind!) i am definitely celebrating after work as i did not know it was button day. party on!

Buttons aren’t just for keeping you pants up or shirt closed anymore. They have made the transition and have made it quite nicely. I always find myself reaching for my buttons regardless of what I am working on. Especially when doing anything with a masculine flair. I always find myself having a hard time add a “flower” to such a project, but not with adding a button.

I simply love buttons. I can remember as a child having a very large, round tin (about a foot in diameter by 5 inches deep) filled with buttons. I used them in my crafting then, and use them a lot now. They have soooo many uses, it just amazes me. : )
Happy Button Day everyone! : )

I think buttons add a “comfort” feel to my cards. As I sort through my buttons for just the perfect one, it reminds me of going through my Grandma’s button box as a child. I could spend hours sorting and playing with them. Thanks for the memory.

Buttons and more buttons… there is very little you cannot use them for. I like them because they add height and dimension to the page. I love the layered look it gives vs. just a flat page. I use them to add a border on a picture or to “divide” the page with a border. I add them to a tree stamp to add the “leaves” or to build the flowers on a flower stamp. you can even build letters with them to make a title for your page. I love them because they are versatile and timeless, and come in so many colors. they add a warm quality to the pages/cards you create and just open up your mind to so many different ways to use them. I most recently made a shaker box filled with tiny stamped images and miniature buttons – this made up the front of a card for fall. The buttons just made it as they not only added color and content, but now I had SOUND too when I shook it. I just can’t get enough of them! I use em all the time.

I love buttons. My very favorite are ones I’ve salvaged from my three boys ruined clothes and add to my LOs. It makes me feel grounded somehow – like we’re including yet another small piece of our lives.
Buttons make the best centers for flowers, a gorgeous border, they hold my pants closed – who could ask for anything more!

I love buttons! It brings back memories of my grandma’s button jar that she had. When we were kids we loved looking through it … looking at all the varieties and pretty colors.
Now that I’m an adult and into scrapbooking and papercrafts I love them even more.
In fact, I have my own button jars now (yes, more than one!) and can’t wait for grandkids of my own to go through “Grandma’s button jar.”!!!

Buttons. Oh man. They are on almost everything I make. But I don’t really have that many. I have a small collection that comes from my grandma’s supply she saved off of old clothes, and my supply saved from all those extra buttons that come with new clothes. I’ve bought very few buttons, and I’m running out of the cute ones! They add a simple yet fun somethin somethin to the middle of a flower or as a corner accent or whatever. I can’t scrap without buttons!

buttons for me are memoris from childhood. I grew up with fabrics and buttons around me since my father was a tailor and a very talented one. My mom was gifted too and she actualy used to sew us all our clothes with beautifull buttons on. I learned how to sew when I was very young, and fell in love with buttons. Through out the years I colected many of them and couldn’t let go even when I thought I’ll never need them again. In the last few years I have lost my mom but kept the buttons. when I started scrapbooking they came back into my life and made me happy again! Buttons day is right for me! thanks!

Buttons are like history of generations in bloom; they never loss their beauty and use; imagine if our Great grand mother would see what we are now creating with buttons now- mine is sure smilling : )
Buttons finish a beautiful card, scrapbook page, sweater, a pair of pants, lamp or even a memo canvas. I have all the buttons of the past generations so far and love to use them in personal card for our family so they can have a piece of our past and love. I love buttons : )

I have been hoarding, err, “collecting” buttons for quite some time now and sure could use some more for my collection. I do put them to use on every layout I do, so really they aren’t just pretty to look at, they do have a purpose, so help a girl out and send some my way!

Buttons are the perfect accent for me. They can be flower centers, they can be dressed up with bling, different colors of floss, they can be distressed with ink. A lot of my layouts use buttons. I guess buttons mean home to me… and old fashioned accent that can appear very modern.

Buttons remind me of my mom, who I lost when I was a little girl. I remember she had jars of buttons on her sewing table. She and my grandmother were seamstresses. I love to use buttons in cards and scrapbooks because they are adorable and because they remind me of them. One of the greatest embellishments, as far as I am concerned!

Oh how I love buttons. My earliest memory of loving buttons is when I think I must of been about 4. I discovered a shelf that I could just barely reach with my little finger tips by standing on a pillow from my Mama’s nearby chair. I’d stand on that pillow and I could barely pull this red rusty old round tin down. I remember falling down backwards and the lid popped off and all around me were what seemed like thousands of buttons. As a little girl, these were like hidden jewels. I would treat them sooooo special. There were mostly just plain buttons but there were many special ones too. I remember my favorite was a heart shaped glass button that was two-toned. One side was red and the other side was clear. To me that was the most valuable one….the “Diamond in the tin”. There were wooden toggle ones that came off a coat of my Grandma’s. There were even a few metal ones that Grandma told me came from a uniform during the Civil War. I’ve never been able to find out if that is a true story but as a little kid, I soaked up all those stories that those buttons created. Even to this day, when I make it home, I’ll sneek into my Mom’s sewing/craft room and lift that lid and just run my fingers through those buttons and remember sitting on the floor sorting and remembering the stories that button can held for me. Oh now I’m getting a little misty missing Grandma now.

I think we all grew up with tins, or glass jars, filled with buttons. At least those of us over 20 yrs.!! (no offense!!) My grandmother’s button tin was handed to my Mom and then to me. While there are some real winners in there, they are mostly white, brown, black, or blue! Even those I use!! But I love all the pretty ones! I put them on cards, on layouts, on tags, and every once in while, I put one on a shirt! This would be a fun giveaway to win!!!!

Button Button Who’s got the Button was a fun game we played during a rainy day when I was young. We used buttons for bingo too. I love the way buutons sound when they move around in a jar. I love to put buutons by color in jars to brighten up my craft space. My favorite way to use them is to put them in the center of a flower. Hooray for Happy Button Day!

My love of buttons started when I was a child. My grandmother always used to have a huge box of buttons that I would play with. I would sort them constantly. They were so simple and so much fun. Now every time I see a box/bag/bunch of them, I just have to run my fingers through them. It’s great to be able to put that love of buttons into my pages and cards.

I think I love buttons so much because you can have an infinite amount of variety in such a tiny little space. I remember my granny had a huge jar of buttons she had collected over the years – some found, some salvaged from worn out clothing, others picked up at garage sales. I used to love just looking at all the buttons in that jar!

ooooooooo!!! I love buttons! I have two reasons why:
1) When my daughter was little (a year or two) I had a huge old tin full of buttons and she would run her little baby hands through, picking up the buttons and letting them fall, just enjoying the colors, the feel, and the sound! It made me smile just to watch her be so content with buttons!
2) My grandma used to stash buttons in her sewing ottoman thingie. I never even knew that it opened up for storage until I was in my teens. When she showed me, I was smiling from ear to ear and they always remind me of her now!
Both are emotional ties – but strong ones at that!

As a child, I loved sorting through my mother’s button box. As a teenage, learning to sew, I was intimidated by buttons because I was intimidated by making buttonholes. As a preschool teacher, I thought buttons were the perfect “raw material” because you could use them to teach so many things and Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad story “The Lost Button” was a favorite. As a cardmaker, I love the huge selection of seasonal and shaped buttons that on the market as well as “regular” ones.
